# The automation trap: digitizing bad processes

If you automate a broken pipeline, you just break things faster. Fix the process first.

Most automation projects that fail do not fail on technology. They fail because a messy manual process was copied, step by step, into software — and now the mess runs at machine speed.

## Trap 1: automating too early

If the team cannot describe the process the same way twice, it is not ready to automate. Write the rules down in plain language first. If they fit on one page, you are ready.

## Trap 2: automating too broadly

Start with the single hand-off that costs the most hours or loses the most leads. One pipeline that works beats five that half-work.

## Trap 3: no failure plan

Every automation eventually meets an input it did not expect. Build alerts and a manual fallback from day one, so a failure is an email — not a lost customer.
